Frequently Asked Questions
How has this credit changed from STARS 2.1 to 2.2?
Minor edits were made. Reporting fields were consolidated to simplify reporting. A comprehensive list of differences can be found in the 2.2 Summary of changes.
What kind of positive, measurable results need to be provided for this credit?
This credit aims to recognize outreach campaigns that engage students, academic and/or non-academic staff and raise awareness around sustainability issues. Positive results are often trackable, and may include a reduction in energy/water or other resources, cost savings, and other benefits. To measure if a campaign yields measurable, positive results, institutions should compare pre-campaign performance to performance during or after the campaign. Increased awareness or increased membership of a mailing list or group is not sufficient in the absence of other positive results.
Example Responses
- Emory University – Detailed descriptions of institution-specific campaigns. Positive, measurable results from the campaign are reported in the form of decreased emissions, waste, and energy use.
- Lehigh University – Response references participation in a national U.S. program (Race to Zero Waste, formerly Recyclemania) as well as an institution-specific program (Energy Conservation Month). Positive, measurable results are included as well as impacts due to COVID-19.
Common Issues Identified During Review
- Affirmative responses must be supported by information provided in descriptive fields. If Yes response is provided for faculty and/or students, the descriptive response must clarify how the campaign targets each group.
